Be Careful What You Do

I threw a rock
It skipped the lake
I never thought
The impact it would make

The little ripple
Turned into a wave
And crashed into
A hidden cave

Inside the cave
Resting for years
Was an angry beast
Smaller than tears

This beast was stirred
And started to spread
By land and sky
Soon many were dead

I never thought
That simple stone
Would one day claim
My own wife Joan

But there she was
Her skin now raw
Destroyed by a beast
That we never saw

She tried and tried
To fight the pain
And watching her die
Drove me insane

I lost my will
To win the game
And just withdrew
Lost in my pain

Whoever thought
So much was at stake
When I threw that rock
Across that damn lake
